Cycle Charting
(Seed)

  • Unless you are in a certain socio-economic or religious group you may have never heard the terms “body literacy,” “fertility awareness,” or “natural family planning.” Soul Center’s intention is to inform Black and Brown communities about Cycle Charting and other forms of body literacy through our online curriculum that features visual representation, along with doing social awareness campaigns like this one.

Right now the fertility awareness landscape consists of primarily white, middle to upper class, religious and secular women. This is from the users of this practice up to the educational institutions and associations. The magnitude and depth of deficiency in racial, sexual orientation, cultural, religious and socioeconomic diversity within this field of study is alarming.

Yet, the Couples to Couples League is currently celebrating 50 years as a non-profit organization that teaches Catholic couples, married and engaged, natural family planning (NFP). The Billings Ovulation Method Association centers the same community and has over 50 years of scientific research. There is an Association of Fertility Awareness Professionals for secular educators and institutions. Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein have teamed up to create the film “The Business of Birth Control.” Still, I see very little representation and funding with people who look like me.

Ironically these methods are steeped in African and Indigenous wisdom. The Billings Association is the only institution we know of that has acknowledged this, stating,  “Many women around the world have discovered the significance of the mucus themselves and used it as a sign of their fertility or infertility long before scientific proofs become available. Several African tribal groups including the Taita, Kamba and Luo are known to have done so for generations; as have some Indigenous Australian communities.”

However, Black women and femmes have the highest rates of maternal and infant mortality, hysterectomies, PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis etc. Modern gynecology was built out of the experimentation of our bodies and all of this has been linked back to systemic racism.

It wasn’t until 2020, with the uproar of the George Floyd’s murder and protest, that I saw some of the secular institutions start to make an effort around cycle charting and reproductive justice (RJ). Please note, I was the only Black/Brown (or even POC) in my 2019 training - the ONLY!

For this reason, we have curated a growing list of Black and Brown educators, allies, as well as a disclaimer for Black and Brown people desiring certification in this field. We are glad to see institutions, associations, educators and users putting forth the effort. Nevertheless, there is so much more growth needed. Paid in full tuition for Black and Brown students is a start! Funding those of us, like Soul Center,  who are serving “marginalized” communities is a start! Offering free and discounted consultation rates is a start!

Below we have a list of books to help white women understand the role your ancestors and you have played in how we got to this point, as well as books with healing approaches so we can move forward with solution-oriented action and some damn sense.

Until next time, much Love and continue to Be the Ritual

Body literacy and fertility awareness strongly informs body sovereignty. Everyone deserves this, especially those whose ancestral lineage was and still is impacted by eugenic practices.

Black/Brown & Thinking about
FABMS Certification?

As stated before, the landscape consists of primarily white, middle to upper class, religious and secular women. Currently (2021) an institution that has been trained to navigate the complexity of human diversity DOES NOT exist yet. If you still decide to go forward I recommend having a strong support system and even better, partnering with a friend to train together.

The range of tuition, prerequisites and religious requirements differ widely. Below is a list of Institutions to help guide your decision process.

I help health conscious women discover the connection between their menstrual cycles and their overall health so they can ditch hormonal birth control forever. I feel like I've spent a good portion of my life in the dark. At the age of 14 I was put on the pill as the only solution to my period problems. I was never educated on how my body truly works. I was conditioned to believe that having a period was a curse. As a result I spent more than a decade hating my period. Doing all the wrong things to fix it.

Whatever fertility problems you’re facing, there are solutions for you but you must make the choice to get help and get educated.

With all our divine intelligence I just knew there was a natural birth control option. Something that preceded the medical industry we know of today. By observing and charting your waking temperature and cervical fluid you can determine on a daily basis where you are in regards to your fertility. You can use this practice, a Fertility Awareness Based Method, for natural birth control, conscious conception and to gain deep insight to your reproductive wellness.

I was enraged that this wisdom was not passed down to me in puberty. So I became a certified educator that centers the experiences of black and brown bodies.

I teach Fertility Awareness out of desire to support others in nourishing their connection with their body, feeling empowered in their relationships, and having tools to make reproductive health decisions. I teach the Justisse Method from a secular, youth-positive perspective, that is celebratory of gender and sexual diversity. I am mindful of the systemic inequities in our society that determine our health and access to support, and employ a feminist intersectional analysis in our work. I approach working with each individual as a partnership with compassion and respect for your unique circumstances.

My vision is for a society that trusts more in what our bodies communicate, that people menstruate with pride, and that people can feel confident in their bodies and their knowledge of them.

I'm a Fertility Awareness Educator certified through The Association of Fertility Awareness Professionals via The Well School of Body Literacy. I have also recently taken a Billings Ovulation Method training to deepen my understanding of cervical mucus.

I am a body literacy educator, movement guide, and doula based in Brooklyn, New York.

I provide supportive presence and individualized education on movement, anatomy, reproductive health, and birth. We are asked to navigate the waters of many complicated systems in our lives, often at our most vulnerable moments. These systems work hard to maintain their authority over us. It is my work to ensure you know your rights, your body, and your choices and empower you to steer your own ship.

I’m a chronically ill and dynamically-disabled, board-certified health coach and fertility awareness educator.

Using the fertility awareness method to become even more body literate has helped me improve symptoms beyond my cycle health. FAM gives me knowledge and insight into how my cycle impacts or is impacted by my chronic conditions. Using this information I’m better able to adjust my lifestyle and habits to support my health. Now I have easier periods, smoother digestion, clearer skin, a movement routine that feels good, improved mental clarity, and a more even mood.

I'm a student of the Earth and child of the plants with a passion for justice. My relationship with the plants has led me through my continued search for ways to re-wild as humans and rediscover what it means to have a body on this planet. This search eventually brought me to fertility awareness.

Now, as an herbalist, fertility awareness and holistic sexual/reproductive health educator (FAE/SHE), I have learned to read my body and learn the ways its cycles ebb and flow with the rhythms of the Earth, and my intention is to share what I have learned in accessible ways.

As I delved into studying this method and began practicing it myself, I felt a wave of relief, a deepening of trust in my body and a blossoming of wisdom that was just below the surface.

I knew where I was in my cycle. I knew what I wanted and needed to support my body and I could advocate for myself with my partners and with my medical practitioners. I finally saw the bigger picture of how my cycle reflected the whole of my physical, emotional, and spiritual health. I invite you to join me in this ancient practice of understanding your fertility. I promise the knowledge you will gain from this practice will forever change you and trickle down into all aspects of your life.

I am a female, mother of 6: 2 born and 4 unborn, hetrosexual most of the time and I strongly believe in women’s rights. I was born, grew up and have lived in 3 different places, on different continents and I am sure I have a bit from each place in me.

I feel that this knowledge should be in our hands, that we need to be taught about our body. I feel we need to regain this knowledge and work with it and not against it.

I signed up to a two-year program with to become an educator of this practice and to help other people have this knowledge. Since 2019 I get to consult with people and help them in their own journey.
