Most colonizers would not touch our babies unless it was for profit or other insidious behaviors. In some ways this allowed us to keep some of our rituals. The invention of modern hospitals would eventually happen, pushing out the birth keepers who had taught these same institutions most of what they knew. They would also make it illegal for birth keepers to practice without a license and for mamas to give birth at home. 

While there is so much more that could be said about these great tragedies, we would much rather share with you the folks who are continuing the legacy of their ancestors:

Beehive Birth Consulting is owned and operated by RaShaunda Lugrand the Mindset Midwife. Our mission at Beehive Birth is to help you establish healthy reproductive habits, for safe and natural family growth plans that are sustainable.

Divine Birth Wisdom

Divine is a trained Doula, Certified Lactation Counselor and Traditional Herbalist in the Southern Tradition. After years of teaching and sharing herbal knowledge locally, she now brings her lessons online to reach a wider community in the comfort of their own home.

New Orleans Breastfeeding Center

The New Orleans Breastfeeding Center provides high quality, holistic, and evidence-based lactation and infant feeding support to families in the New Orleans metro area and surrounding parishes.

Milky Mama

Milky Mama was created by Krystal Nicole Duhaney, a Registered Nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and breastfeeding mommy of two.

Ancient Song

Ancient Song is a national birth justice organization working to eliminate maternal and infant mortality and morbidity among low-income Black and Latinx people.

Commonsense Childbirth

A non-profit organization was founded in 1998 by Jennie Joseph who has dedicated her life to helping women and families have better birth experiences.

Birthmark Doula Collective

Pregnancy, labor, birth & the 4th trimester - the people who are Birthmark Doula Collective offer support, education, services and community during the perinatal year and beyond

Cihuapactli Collective

We came together in 2015 after experiencing a lack of community support for families & womb health. Since then we’ve humbly led the effort in Phoenix to bring Indigenous families together to share knowledge, wisdom, and provide care for those in need.

Birthing Advocacy Doula Training

BADT courses are socially conscious, culturally appropriate, diverse, and action-oriented. We not only train our students to serve their clients using the best practices available, we also provide them with a wide perspective of disparities, inequalities, policies and rights, and prepare them to be active partners in the movement to change birth and reproductive health culture locally, nationally and globally.

Southern Birth Justice

Our vision is to make this care accessible to all peoples- especially Black, Brown, youth, immigrant, indigenous, LGBTQ+, low- income and other marginalized communities. Our mission is to expand Birth Justice by using story telling, popular education, and community organizing to improve access to midwifery and doula care.

Alaska Native Birthworkers Community

The Alaska Native Birthworkers Community seeks to formalize and grow a network of Alaska Native birthworkers who feel confident, competent and grounded in cultural values to support Native birthing families for better health and wellness outcomes for parents and babies, while also advocating for systemic change to better support Alaska Native birthing families.

Mama Sana Vibrant Woman

We are a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in Austin, TX by a collective of Black and Hispanic mamas determined to make a change. We provide culturally resonant and quality prenatal and postnatal care in Austin and Travis County.

Uzazi Village

Through education, support, and advocacy, Uzazi Village works to improve perinatal health in the Kansas City community and around the country. We work every day to build a respectful and supportive healthcare system that fosters equitable and sustainable outcomes in maternal and infant health.

The Matrona

The Matrona was started in 2001 in Asheville, NC as an educational program for birth caregivers. In 2004 we became a non-profit, The Matrona Foundation, in response to the growing numbers of women and families without reasonable access to childbirth education, childbirth support services and mediation/conflict resolution options.
